Composer's Notes:
Finding just the right text for a project is an enjoyable part of the pre-composition process for me. I get to spend time reading beautiful, provocative, revealing poems, searching for one that resonates with the mood and meaning I'm hoping to express in the composition. Barter by Sara Teasdale is a gentle poem that somehow simultaneously soars with breathtaking observations about life.
The composition is in three sections, reflecting the organization of the poem in three stanzas. The piece is in E-flat major, with no large-scale modulation to another key, and while the chord progressions are mostly functional and conventional, my fondness for jazz voicings finds itself at home from time to time with this quiescent yet vibrant text.
