Jean Rebel (pronounced Re-BEL' (1666–1747)) was a violin child prodigy who studied with Jean-Baptiste Lully. He became a harpsichordist, conductor and composer. He was the first violinist of the Royal Academy of Music In Paris and by 1726 served as court composer to Louis XIV. Rebel published three books of sona- tas and suites for the violin. In his compositions he used unusual harmonies and rhythms. He intended much of his music to be used as ballet music as well as for orchestral performance. Jean-Féry Rebel was more that seventy years old when he composed his last work, the ballet Les Elemens (1737). The work begins with one of the most strikingly original works of the Baroque repertoire called “Chaos.” This piece is extremely dissonant for that time period and it represented musically the chaos of the beginning of the world.After listening to some of Rebel's music it appears that he like to compose descrip- tive concert pieces like Bells! It is a joyous expression of the sound of the bells of a Cathedral. The chime part is optional but certainly lends more of the sound of great cathedral bells. The half notes that represent the chiming bells will have more of a ringing tone if you play them with a heavy accent as marked.
