The opening section, Daybreak, is tranquil and serene, yet intensifies as the hive becomes active. A flurry of musical activity accompanies the next section, Scouting for Pollen, as forager bees disperse. Other interesting sections include Directional Tango, Her Majesty, the Queen, Hungry Bear. depicting the ransacking of the hive. , and New Cycle Begins, during which several of the previous themes come back in a brilliant collage of musical sounds and textures. Experience the full gamut of styles in this brilliant and highly entertaining work. This piece is a musical depiction of a day in the life of a honeybee hive. The sections of the work are as follows. Daybreak - It's morning, and as the sun rises the hive becomes active. Scouting for Pollen - The forager bees disperse in search of pollen and nectar. Directional Tango - A forager returns and dances as others watch. The dance relays the direction and distance of the food source. Her Majesty, the Queen - Meanwhile the queen is busy making eggs while others attend to her every need. Hungry Bear - A bear discovers and ransacks the hive for its honey. But the bear pays a high price for the sweet treasure, as the beast is stung repeatedly. Regroup - The drones and workers take inventory and begin repairing and salvaging what's left. New Cycle Begins - As a new queen emerges, the old queen leaves the hive to begin a new colony. There are sections that call for a mouthpiece buzzing technique to mimic the sound of the hive. It is important to note that the pitch intonation is not critical during these buzzing sections. as bees do not buzz in tune. In fact, a better effect is achieved when pitches are varied slightly. Practice these sections until the desired effect is achieved. Then, to promote consistency, have musicians buzz the same way each time thereafter. For the pitch buzzing at the beginning, have brass key in on the clarinet notes in measure 1 as they intone the pitches to be played. There are four non-pitched percussion parts. Each stave requires only one player per part. Designed for high school groups and upper-level middle school groups. Independence is encouraged, but many lines are cross-cued.
