Baermann was undisputedly the best clarinettist of his days and performed concerts throughout Europe together with his son Carl, also a talented clarinettist. Mendelssohn wrote Konzertstuck Nr. 1 in F minor Op. 113 for them both, employing clarinet and basset horn as soloists with either piano or orchestra accompaniment.
