Vesper Variations was permiered in 2003 by the Oslo Philharmonic Choir with Tore Erik Mohn conducting. It is my most contrapuntal work and all three movements incorporate the main theme in many different shapes and contexts. I was very much into the works of Bach at the time and wanted to write a piece that had a strong fugal element and still had a modal, contemporary and passionate feel to it. Thanks to Karen Haugom Olsen for great suggestions for the organ part, to Tore Erik Mohn for advocating the piece and conducting it with such tast, and finally to the Oslo Philharmonic Choir for a wonderful premiere recording.
